Honours Major: Church Music Ministry (18 courses)
Notes:
- Incoming music students will be required to complete an audition prior to course registration. For students entering the Church Music Ministry or Music in Worship majors, one of the two pieces performed at the audition must be from the worship music repertoire.
- A placement test for keyboard skills will be administered at the time of the music audition for incoming students. RCM Grade VI or demonstrated equivalence is expected. Students who do not meet this requirement will be placed in keyboard classes at Redeemer (MUS-104/105/106) based on the assessment. Students will pay an additional fee for the keyboard classes. Keyboard proficiency is expected of all music students.
- A placement test for theory is also administered at the audition. This assessment determines whether the student needs to complete MUS-110 or is exempted from the course. Students who are exempted will need to take another 300-level MUS elective for the program.

Basic Theory and Aural Skills MUS-110
A course designed to develop fluency and skill in the basics of music with reference to performance, theory, and ear training.
Music Theory I MUS-121
Study of basic materials of tonal music, triads, sevenths, non-harmonic tones, analysis of simple musical forms, melody writing, and four-part harmonization in the eighteenth century style.

Study of secondary dominants, modulation, altered and chromatic chords, melody writing, and four-part harmonization in the eighteenth/ nineteenth century style.

Music History I MUS-310
A study of the Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods in Western musical history, c.700–1700, focusing on representative composers, their works and their respective cultural contexts.

Design of Worship MUS-330
An introduction to the structure and content of services of Christian corporate worship, including definitional understanding, surveys of practices throughout history and across denominational traditions, and contemporary practice. Theory and history intersect with practice as students gain experience in such areas as use of scripture, leading in corporate prayer, and the exegesis and choice of sung texts. While the role of music in worship plays a prominent part in this course, it is open to students without detailed musical knowledge or performance capabilities.
Composing and Arranging for Worship MUS-331
An introduction to topics of composition and arranging with special emphasis on their deployment in the service of corporate Christian worship. Students demonstrate their understanding of in-class topics (including studies of form, phrase structure, counterpoint and instrumentation) by creating new works or adapting existing music useful in worship settings.

Philosophy of Music in the Church MUS-460
The relationship of music to the church’s worship, education, and outreach is examined with reference to Scripture, the historical practice of the church, and contemporary culture; a personal philosophy of music in the church..
Music Internship MUS-480
Gain music ministry experience working in a local church, school, or other organizational setting. Work 120 hours of such ministry under the direction of a musician or pastor in the ministry setting, meet regularly with a faculty supervisor, and submit relevant written work. Senior Recital/ Lecture Recital MUS-390/490
Students prepare for and perform a music/lecture recital.
Prerequisites:

Theological Interpretation of the Bible REL-201
An introduction to the theological reading and interpretative practices of reading Scripture. This course involves a survey of biblical interpretation and the variety of methodologies that have been used to study Scripture.

Foundations of Mission and Ministry I REL-253
An introductory study of the biblical and theological foundations and the historical development of mission. Selected current issues and problems will be examined.
Liturgies: Rhythms of Restoration, Hope & Grace REL-451
This course examines the biblical and theological principles, challenges, and opportunities that liturgies offer the church as God’s agent for reconciliation in a fallen world. Students will study a variety of contextualized liturgies using a blend of ancient future practices that draw from the deep tradition of the Church and make use of the richness of the arts as a way to communicate hope and grace.

Leadership, Coaching, and Mentoring in Ministry REL-352
The purpose of this course is to develop an awareness of the leadership dynamics involved in youth ministry that flow from the intersection between four realities: the youth pastor, adolescents, the ministering context, and the cultural context. The ministering context will be used as the “anchoring reality” around which the others will be explored.

An examination of the character of discipleship in youth ministry, and an application of discipleship to many specific youth ministry practices.

Admission Requirements
The Music program requires applicants to complete a music audition for proper course placement.
Applicants from Ontario will be considered for general undergraduate admission based on the following requirements:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 U English
- Five additional Grade 12 U or M level courses
- Minimum grade average of 65%
- No O-level courses or Co-op courses used

Audition information
All prospective music majors and minors are required to complete a music audition during the application process.
Below is important information to consider as you visit Redeemer for your music audition, including a description of the types of assessment we will do, as well as how you can prepare for them.
Theory Assessment
We will give you a short test that will assess your knowledge of basic theory including major and minor scales, key signatures, and intervallic relations. You will also have a basic ear training and rhythmic dictation test.
Primary Area of Study
As a music student, you will choose a primary area of study (instrumental, vocal, or piano). You will be able to elect to take lessons in another area but we require you to choose one area that you focus on to achieve an artistic level of performance. If you are unsure of your primary area, please call Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen at 905-648-2139 ext. 4252.
Audition Preparation
Please come to your audition prepared to sing or play two pieces (preferably memorized). The two pieces should be contrasting pieces from larger movements or works (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic periods). Please note that an accompanist will not be provided for your audition.
Piano Proficiency Level
Upon entrance to Redeemer’s music program, you must have a base level of keyboard proficiency. For students whose primary area of study is not piano, they should have at least Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 4. If a student does not enter the program with Grade 4 RCM proficiency, they will be assigned to a keyboard class at the time of their audition. We have a sequence of 3 levels of keyboard classes to help students achieve this proficiency. Students with no piano background, for example, will be placed in level I. Please come with a piano piece to play at a level you feel very comfortable with.
For students whose primary area of study is piano, they should begin with a minimum level of Grade 8 RCM.
Ensemble
An opportunity will be available to you to audition for any of the following vocal or instrumental ensembles while you are on campus:
- Concert Choir
- Instrumental Ensemble
- Jazz Ensemble
For some of you, your audition for the primary applied area will suffice as an audition for ensemble (e.g., a vocal audition will double as an audition for choir). We also host auditions in the first week of the fall term. Following are guidelines for your preparation for ensemble auditions.
Concert Choir
- Come prepared to sing the hymn or song of your choosing in your appropriate voice range
- Sight-read a short passage
Instrumental Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble
- Come prepared to play one piece on your instrument, with or without accompaniment.
- Be able to play one major and one minor scale
- You will be asked to sight-read a short passage at your appropriate level
- If you would like to audition for instrumental jazz ensemble and are comfortable with improvisation then you can demonstrate that for us.
